Harry Potter
Author, J. K. Rowling, Fights Fraud
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is her sixth best
selling book of fiction. Arthur Weasley, a likeable continuing character,
is promoted to head the new Office for the Detection and Confiscation of
Counterfeit Spells and Protective Objects, with a staff of 10. In one of
the cases, a fraudster sells Metamorph-Medals to put around your neck and
allow you to change your appearance at will. Unfortunately, the buyers
only turn an unpleasant orange color, and some sprout warts all over their
bodies. Weasley's office uses confidential tip-offs to initiate
investigations (pages 84 - 87, 284). Rowling is a victim of fraud in real
life. In less than 24 hours after the printed English version of the book
was released, the full text was available in China on the Internet as a
unauthorized free e-book. Pirated printed copies of the book were sold
four months before the official release in China for 1/10th the price. The
fake soft cover books were poorly translated, crucial pages were missing,
and the plot ending was changed. China is regarded as the world’s biggest
source of illegally copied goods.
